I wasn't planning to write this kind of article at all, but last night I was very pleased with the new James Cameron film "Avatar". Cameron has been known for his use of war, and strong females in his films, and plays upon the dynamics, and politics of those elements very well. During "Avatar", I was particularly impressed by the choice of color in the scenes, (which are extremely beautiful) and the deep sense of culture that exists in films. There's no painful, or irritating exposition explaining the culture of the native creatures. It's done more in a way that you kind of just live it with them. I enjoyed the much more imaginative way that they approach a general amount of things in this story. All of the characters in the movie are compelling, likable, or at least interesting.
One of the coolest things about James Cameron's "Avatar" however, is that even though they get close to, and touch on some of the great movie cliche plot points, they cunningly veer off and away from the need to beat those things into the ground. The movie stays true to it's own message, making it difficult for me to write about without exposing key elements of the plot. =)
Basically this movie really rocks. If you liked "Fern Gully" as a kid, you'll love this movie because it's kind of like "Fern Gully" times 20 with even better colors, and special effects.
And before "Avatar" and "Star Trek" there was Bill Shatner speaking Esperanto, in the horror film called "Incubus".

As an Esperanto speaker I found it terrifying! His Esperanto pronunciation that is, not the film.

Avatar is an enormously entertaining piece of screen spectacle that goes a long way toward redeeming the somewhat debased concept of a Hollywood blockbuster...
